How One Entomologist Puts Communication and Policy Training Into Action in Pesticide Safety Education

This is the next article in the “Standout ECPs” series contributed by the Entomological Society of America’s Early Career Professionals (ECP) Committee, highlighting outstanding ECPs that are doing great work in the profession.

Dowen Jocson, Ph.D., is a pesticide safety educator at Washington State University. Dowen spent half of her childhood in the Philippines and the other half on an island in the Pacific Ocean called Saipan. She then received her B.S. (2015) and M.S. (2017) degrees from Saint Louis University studying pollinators of violets and temperature effects on treehopper vibrational songs. Afterward, she moved to Washington State University to pursue her Ph.D. in entomology (2023), looking at the use of substrate-borne vibrations as a pest management strategy for pear psylla.
